Message of President Prodi to Ahmad Qurai, Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority and Rawhi Fatouh Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council on the death of President Yasser Arafat

Dear Prime Minister,
On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to express my most sincere condolences on the demise of President Yasser Arafat.

The Palestinians have lost a leader who symbolised their aspirations of a Palestinian state.

I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of President Arafat and to the Palestinian people.

The European Commission wishes to expresses its continued commitment to a resolution of the Middle East conflict. The Commission is working with the Palestinian Authority towards this goal and towards ensuring a peaceful and democratic transition in the days and weeks to come.
