EU TO TRAIN INTERNATIONAL
COMMERCIAL MEDIATORS AND ARBITRATORS
IN EGYPT
A three-day training seminar will take place in Cairo
under the EU-funded regional programme “Promotion of
International Commercial Arbitration and Other
Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques”. The seminar
will take place from 5th to 7th February at the
Diplomatic Institute. The seminar, organised in
partnership with the Ministry of Justice, will gather a
selected group of Egyptian judges and lawyers from the
private and public sectors. The seminar will be
conducted by two European professors in commercial law
and arbitration and is intended to be very practical and
highly interactive, including simulations and
role-plays. In addition, video training materials will
be used to give the audience a clear perception of how
professional mediation works.
The overall purpose of this regional project is to
facilitate foreign investment and international trade in
the Mediterranean region, including South-South trade.
This European intervention is based on the assumption
that one of the obstacles preventing enhanced trade and
investment relations in Southern Mediterranean
countries, particularly for Small and Medium Enterprises
(SMEs), is the lack of a mature and reliable dispute
resolution mechanisms that could avoid or at least
resolve efficiently disputes arising during the course
of business relationships. Experience has demonstrated
that arbitration and mediation have proven to be useful
and efficient methods for settling international
commercial disputes.
The seminar in Cairo is the last activity carried out
under this European programme. The final closing
Conference will take place in Rome in September 2007. At
this Conference, where Egypt will be represented
together with all the South Mediterranean Countries, it
is expected that all partners will agree on a
co-operation mechanism to develop a more substantial
mediation and arbitration infrastructure for the whole
Mediterranean Region.
