Press Release
Temporary International Mechanism (TIM) makes fifth
payment from European funds to public service providers
and pensioners
The Temporary International Mechanism (TIM) has started
paying social allowances to Palestinian public service
providers and pensioners. This is the fifth payment
since the TIM became operational at the end of June
2006. This allowance will reach more than 80% of
civilian employees on the payroll of the Palestinian
Authority.
The TIM continues to support vulnerable Palestinians who
have witnessed a steep and sudden decline in their
purchasing power. The beneficiaries of the TIM
allowances have not been paid regularly by the
Palestinian Authority since February 2006.
Eligible beneficiaries will receive an allowance of NIS
1,500 (€270) directly in their bank account. This
payment is made with contributions from the European
Commission, Spain and the United Kingdom.
The mandate of the TIM has been extended by the Middle
East Quartet until the end of March 2007. TIM will
therefore continue its direct support to the Palestinian
people and workers delivering essential social services.
The TIM was established by the European Commission at
the initiative of Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
All TIM activities are carried out in partnership with
the Office of the President.
In 2006, the European Union, through its Member States
and the European Commission, allocated €651 million to
the Palestinians, through a wide range of programmes
that have been implemented by different organisations.
This marks a 27% increase in the level of assistance
compared to 2005. The European Union is determined to
maintain this high level of support to the Palestinians.
