Javier Solana,
EU High Representative for the CFSP,
took part in the informal Quartet ministerial meeting
Sharm el-Sheikh, 23 November 2004
Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the
Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), participated in
the informal ministerial meeting of the Middle East Quartet
held today in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt).
He noted that the meeting today had been useful in
particular to coordinate views, in this crucial time of
transition, in particular on the three key issues of
Palestinian elections, financial support and security. On
the first issue, there is strong, united support for the
holding of presidential elections on 9 January next year.
The EU and its Quartet partners will redouble efforts to
assist the Palestinians with practical steps to ensure the
success of these elections.
Secondly, the strong performance of the Palestinian
Authority in instituting financial reforms was noted. There
is continued readiness to support the PA during the
transition.
Finally, broader reforms should be pursued, in particular in
the field of security. On this issue, the EU and its Quartet
partners remain prepared to facilitate efforts aimed at
helping the Palestinian Authority restore law and order and
combat terrorism.
This statement is attributable to Cristina Gallach,
spokeswoman of Javier Solana.
