EGYPTIAN-EUROPEAN STREET THEATRE
FESTIVAL
CAIRO, ALEXANDRIA, ASSIUT AND MINYA
(19-22 MAY 2007)
Draw the curtains for the theatre festival! Wait! There
are no curtains, let alone a theatre house. German,
Austrian and Egyptian theatre groups mingle with the
crowd on public streets. They move freely around
communicate without using lots of words.
It is all there: performance theatre from Germany,
pantomime from Austria and story-narrator and puppet
theatre from Egypt. Each group narrates a story in its
own style.
This first Egyptian-European Street Theatre Festival is
financially supported by the Delegation of the European
Commission in Egypt and organised by the German Goethe
Institut, in co-operation with the Austrian Cultural
Forum. Performances will take place in Cairo on 19 May
from 2 to 6 p.m. at Al Alfi Street, Downtown; in
Alexandria on 20 May at Salah Salem Street; and in
Assiut and Minya on 22 May. The groups do not only seek
to entertain the crowd but also to stimulate their
imagination through the use of diverse narrative
techniques, promising fun and amusement.
Street theatre performance is rooted in the end of the
19th century in Germany and was primarily addressed the
masses. Due to its unconventionality, it relies on
creativity, improvisation and spectacular performances.
The same programme will be held in Cairo (on 19 May) and
Alexandria (on 20 May):
2.00 p.m. Zebra Stelzentheater, Germany
2.30 p.m. Du & Nichts Pantomimentheater, Austria
3.20 p.m. Ramadan Khatir, Geschichtenerzähler, Egypt
4.10 p.m. Das Papiertheater, Germany
5.00 p.m. Zebra Stelzentheater, Germany
5.30 p.m. Welyawel Puppentheater, Egypt
