DR. JAVIER SOLANA VISITS EGYPT
FROM 22 TO 24 MAY 2007
Dr. Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common
Foreign and Security Policy, is travelling to Israel,
the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon and Egypt from
Monday, 21 May to Thursday, 24 May 2007 for meetings
with political leaders to discuss the latest, critical
developments in the region, following the recent upsurge
in violence in Israel, Palestine and Lebanon.
Dr. Solana will meet, amongst others, the Egyptian
President H.E. Hosni Mubarak, the Arab League
Secretary-General Dr. Amr Moussa, the Egyptian Foreign
Minister, Mr. Ahmed Abu El Gheit; the Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livin,
the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Lebanese
Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and the Speaker of the
Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri.
Dr. Solana will urge all the parties in the region to
restore and maintain calm and he will underline the need
to continue making every possible effort to move forward
the Middle East peace process. The European Union
supports the Arab Peace Initiative, reaffirmed at the
Arab League Summit in Riyadh in March. Dr. Solana will
reiterate the vital importance of national unity in
Palestine. In Bierut, Dr. Solana will express his
concern at the recent clashes in the north of Lebanon
and voice support for Prime Minister Siniora and his
government.
