AMBASSADOR KLAUS EBERMANN ATTENDS
GRANT CONTRACTS AWARD CEREMONY
UNDER THE SOUTH SINAI DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IN SHARM EL
SHEIKH
H.E. Dr. Klaus Ebermann will visit
Sharm El Sheik on 12 June 2007 to follow up on
developments in the EU-funded South Sinai Regional
Development Programme. More specifically, Ambassador
Ebermann will attend the ‘Grant Contracts Award’
Ceremonial Conference, which will be held at Jolie Sharm
Hall at Jolie Ville Movenpick Golf’ Hotel. During his
visit, Ambassador Ebermann will be also be received by
H.E. General Mohamed Hany Metwally, Governor of South
Sinai.
The South Sinai Regional Development Programme is
financed by the EU at a total of €64 million. This
five-year programme is the first decentralised programme
to be implemented by a Governorate (South Sinai) rather
than by a government ministry. The Programme aims to
develop the local economy and activities and
perseveration, as well as support the social, cultural
and natural resources of South Sinai.
The Programme will reach this target by following two
tracks, namely: developing infrastructure and supporting
the local community directly and indirectly. Within the
first track, 21 contracts have been signed for a total
amount of €34 million. These contracts allow the
implementation of following activities: water supply to
St. Katherine, water supply to rural communities, solid
waste management, wastewater treatment in El Tur, a
sustainable tourism development plan, supply of
environmental equipment for mooring, monitoring and
tracking as well as patrol boats and a workboat.
Within the second track, a call for proposals was
launched for €20.5 million, under which 55 contracts
were awarded. The beneficiaries of these contracts are
NGOs, SMEs, local authorities, national and
international organisations; all concerned with the
development of South Sinai. The themes of their
proposals cover capacity building, cultural heritage,
social development, economic development and
environment.
In addition to all this, 120 small grants below €10,000
euros were awarded directly through the Sheikhs of the
South Sinai governorate to the local bedouin
communities. In total €1 million was awarded. These
small grants will be used by the Bedouin community to
implement small projects in the fields of water,
agriculture, livestock, handicrafts and ecotourism.
