EU AND EGYPT SIGN NEW GRANT
AGREEMENT
TO SUPPORT SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
FOR €20 MILLION [EGP 152 MILLION]
The European Union and the Egyptian Government will sign
a new grant financing agreement worth €20 million [EGP
152 million] to support community infrastructure and
demand driven social development activities in urban and
rural areas. During the signature ceremony, the Egyptian
side will be represented by H.E. Dr. Fayza Abu El Naga,
Minister of International Co-operation and Dr. Hany Seif
El Nasr, Managing Director of the Social Fund for
Development. The European Union will be represented by
Mr. Georgios Tsitsopoulos, Head of Operations of the
Delegation of the European Commission in Egypt. The
signature will take place on Monday, 2nd July at 11:00
a.m. at the Ministry of International Co-operation
Office at 8 Adly Street, Downtown.
This new programme, which will be implemented over four
years by the Social Fund for Development, aims at
contributing to poverty reduction and socio-economic
development through activities supporting employment
creation and income generation for the poor, thus,
enhancing the living standards of citizens in geographic
areas with major concentrations of poverty.
To achieve this, the programme will give special
attention to the direct involvement of local communities
in the implementation of the selected activities,
emphasizing the role of local NGOs and Community
Development Associations as vehicles for social and
infrastructural services aimed at the poor. This will
increase the targeting of projects for the poor and
achieve a stronger involvement of the local workforce.
This programme is based on the positive experiences of
the Social Fund for Development in the Community
Infrastructure and Community Development programmes. The
EU and the Social Fund for Development have been
successfully co-operating for over 15 years.
