Cultural and social issues have been one of the three
main components of the 1995 Barcelona Process, based on
a regional and partnership approach. Since then the
European Commission has funded several cultural projects
in Egypt under the local and regional programmes like
Euromed Heritage or Euromed Audiovisual, the 6th
Framework Programme focused on research and technology,
in addition of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean
Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures. Within the
new framework of the ENP (European Neighbourhood
Policy), the Action Plan signed last March between Egypt
and the European Union has agreed to strengthen links
and cooperation in culture areas.
The proposals selected in the last call for proposals
(2006) which are implemented during this year are: the
“Euro-Egyptian Street Theater Festival” (Goethe
Institute) held between 17 and 28 May in Cairo,
Alexandria, Assiut, and Minia, the exhibition from 13 to
23 May on “Occidentalism, the West in Egyptian Eyes”
(Van Gogh l’Elfenoun Art Association) with the works of
twenty Egyptian artists, the “4th Fayoum International
Youth Film Festival” (Al Asala Foundation) held from 25
June to 1 July in Al Fayoum, “Cairo’s Belle Époque:
Architectural Patterns” (Dayra Association for Culture
and Arts) for the production of a practical guide for
architects with some patters revealing the archetypal
designs and solutions embedded in Cairo's Belle Epoque
architecture, and “Capture Life” (Media Arts for
Development) for the production of 13 episodes of TV
short comedies. |
