The First Regional Workshop
on
FP7 Health Research
Co-operation between the EU and the Mediterranean Partners
The Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Egyptian FP7 National Contact Point for Health, in close collaboration and coordination with the European Commission are organizing a Brokerage Event on the 29th and 30th of October 2007, at 9:00 a.m., hosted by Theodore Bilharz Research Institute, Cairo, Egypt. The events addresses researchers and experts from health research community, industry and SMEs, and NGOs who are invited to participate from Egypt, Europe, and the Mediterranean region.
The event will be attended by H.E. Dr. Hany Helal, the Egyptian Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, H.E. Dr. Hatem El Gabaly, the Egyptian Minister of Health and Population, H.E. Dr. Klaus Ebermann, Head of the European Commission Delegation in Cairo, and Dr. Octavi Quintana Trias, Director of Health Directorate, DG Research, the European Commission.
The aim of this event is to develop and support the networking between the EU and the Mediterranean partners' scientific communities in the area of health research, in view of opportunities offered by the EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). Furthermore, the event should provide the opportunity to jointly discuss and identify further areas of mutual interest and complementarities for future cooperation in this research field between the European Union and the Mediterranean region. The brokerage will focus on Stem Cells, Cancer, Diabetes, Kidney Diseases, Liver Diseases and Health care systems in response to the health theme under FP7, and the major regional health priorities.
The event will feature speeches from the European Commission and from national, European and Mediterranean representatives and experts on the current health research status and opportunities. Moreover, the brokerage event will offer interactive parallel networking, information sessions and matchmaking among participants, in light with the three main pillars of Health thematic priority under FP7.
The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is the main EU instrument to support research in Europe, and it is open for international cooperation. FP7 has duration of 7 years (2007-2013) with a total budget of over 53 Billion euros.
The main objectives of health theme under FP7 are improve the health of European citizens and boost the competitiveness of health-related industries and businesses, while addressing global health issues such as anti-microbial resistance, HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and emerging pandemics. Emphasis will be put on translational research (translation of basic discoveries into clinical applications including scientific validation of experimental results), the development and validation of new therapies, methods for health promotion and prevention including promotion of child health, healthy ageing, diagnostic tools and medical technologies, as well as sustainable and efficient health care systems. The total budget for Health Thematic Priority under FP7 amounts to 6.1 Billion euros.
Egypt has participated in 5 projects under the Sixth Framework Programme FP6 in Health-related topics with a total EC contribution for Egyptian partners of EUR 400,000.00
