SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TRAINING FOR NGOS
WORKSHOPS BEGIN 15 NOVEMBER IN MARSAARA/HELWAN
Cairo, November 15, 2007: The first in a series of workshops focusing on Sustainable Development actions in local communities begins today in Marsaara, Cairo, at the Environmental Awareness Centre, opposite the Masaara Youth Centre. The initiative is being organized and promoted by the EU-funded SMAP III TA program in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment and the EEAA.
The Marsaara/Helwan area was originally developed under the auspices of the First Lady and proposed by HE the Minister of the Environment as a pilot area for Sustainable Development activities. It is a fitting venue therefore for the inauguration of a series of about 10 workshops aiming to provide a thorough grounding for members of local associations and non-governmental organizations in applying Sustainable Development (SD) principles to their activities.
The Workshops will focus on SD themes such as
• environmental education
• climate change
• energy efficiency
• waste collection and recycling
• preparing “bankable” projects
In addition, it is hoped this knowledge will enable NGOs working on the ground to contribute effectively to the formulation of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (NSSD). In a separate initiative, again funded by the European Union, SMAP III TA, the MoE and the EEAA finalized the planning for the NSSD earlier this year.
Members of the press are invited to attend the opening of the Inauguration Workshop, from 10am to 11am on Thursday 15 November, which will be introduced by Dr Atwa (EEAA, Director Regional Branch, Cairo), Dr Mawaheb Adb El Moneam Abu El Azm (EEAA, Chief Execture Officer) and Dr Hartwig Behnfeld (EU-SMAP III TA, Team Leader).
