“TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT” - PRIVATE SECTOR OPPORTUNITIES SEMINAR IN CAIRO 27-28 NOVEMBER
Cairo, 27 November 2007 – Sustainable Development is not new for the Private Sector in the Mediterranean Region: for many, adopting cleaner production technologies, for example, is a major factor in increasing productivity and opening new markets in Europe and elsewhere. These and other opportunities deriving from Sustainable Development will be on the agenda of the seminar, “Towards Sustainable Development”, which starts today at the Marriott Hotel in Zamalek, Cairo.
The seminar is organized by BUSINESSMED - a private sector organization that brings together the major business associations of 12 Mediterranean countries, 3 observer members from EU countries and 1 associate member (Mauritania) – in collaboration with EU-SMAP, the EU-funded programme for the Environment and Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean Region, and UNEP’s Cleaner Production Regional Activity Centre.
Businessmed delegates from across the region - including Lebanon, which currently holds the Presidency, and the Federation of Egyptian Industries - will meet with representatives from the EC, SMAP, CP/RAC and other international agencies to debate issues such as Green Competitiveness, Private Sector access to Environmental Financing, and Innovation and Knowledge Transfer for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME).
Members of the press are invited to attend the Opening Speeches from 10am to 11am on Tuesday 27th November. Hicham Abou Jaoude (Businessmed Lebanon) Carmen Falkenberg (ECD Cairo) Virginia Alzina (CP/RAC) and Hartwig Behnfeld (SMAP III TA) will be available for interview following their speeches.
Funding for the workshop was provided by the EU SMAP program and UNEP CP/RAC.
