European Union Prize for Journalists
Committed to Human Rights, Democracy and Development
LORENZO NATALI PRIZE FOR 2008
Each year the European Union awards prizes to print media journalists throughout the world – and from 2008 for the first time, to radio and television journalists – who through their work show commitment to the defence of human rights, democracy and development. The Lorenzo Natali Prize is awarded to the best fifteen submissions by journalists in different regions, including the Arab World and the Middle East, selected by a special jury. The competition is organised by the European Commission in collaboration with such groups as Reporters Without Frontiers and the World Association of Newspapers. The award winners will be special guests of the European Commission at a ceremony in France on the occasion of European Development Day.
The Lorenzo Natali Prize rewards journalists who tackle the topic of human rights, democracy or development. Each applicant or group of applicants can submit one journalistic item printed or aired between 1 January and 30 June 2008. Three prizes are awarded in each regional zone. The first prize carries a cash value of euro 5,000; second prize euro 2,500; third prize euro 1,500.
Details of the rules of the competition rules, and further information, can be found at www.nataliprize2008.eu.
The Delegation of the European Commission in Cairo encourages Egyptian journalists to submit their work for the competition. Deadline for entries is 30 June 2008.
