G8 Summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, Japan - 8 July 2008
European Commission President Barroso: G8 agreement on climate goals keeps world on track for global deal in 2009
After the G8 working session on Climate Change on Tuesday 8 July European Commission President Barroso declared:
"I am very happy about the results of the G8 on climate change. The EU's benchmark for success at this Summit has been achieved. We remain on track to reach a global climate deal in Copenhagen in 2009. We have agreed a long-term goal of at least 50% reduction of emissions by 2050, and we have agreed that we should also set up mid-term targets, as the EU is already establishing for 2020”.
He added:
“A new, shared vision by the major economies on the climate challenge within the UNFCCC framework has emerged from the G8 in Toyako. This is a strong signal to citizens around the world. The science is clear, the economic case for action is stronger than ever. Now we need to go the extra mile to secure an ambitious global deal in Copenhagen that will enable the world's nations to rise to this challenge together.”
